Finding Happiness in a Vacuum

–Not a vacant space type vacuum, but an electrical cleaning device vacuum.

I visited my daughter Katie and her children in Seattle last week. Katie is a master gardener. Looking out her front windows is like looking at a small garden park, and even in March, everything is green and flowering. Gardening is her passion. The yard and house is far back from the main road in a quiet setting surrounded by her successful efforts. She disclaims that some people are born with a green thumb and others just aren’t. She says, “It is something that can be learned” and she set out to learn it. But this post is not about gardening, it’s about vacuuming.

Kate picked me up from the airport and said she needed to stop at Costco and buy a vacuum, so we did. We bought a vacuum and many other things besides. When we got home she opened it up and put it together and began to use it. The kids and I started playing a game in the dining room. We heard delighted sounds from far down the hall as she was vacuuming the bedrooms. “I like this vacuum!” “Wow! You ought to see how this thing cleans!” In time, she drew nearer to us where the with the vacuum and began again, in case we hadn’t heard, “This vacuum is so cool!” “You should see how good it works!” The kids didn’t seem to be at all interested in a vacuum whether it was new or not.

While she was vacuuming the stairs, we again heard her praises and were all called to “Come see how cool this is!” She showed us the small brush foot that attaches to the hose of the vacuum. It is called a Power Paw which is used to vacuum in corners and small places and was proving ideal for the stairs. When we got a good look at it, she pushed some button and it began to spin so fast it was a blur. It was a pretty neat little gadget–my vacuum doesn’t have one of those, so I was impressed. She then demonstrated it on the steps so we could see what a good job it did. She wasn’t interested in any of us helping her because it was like having a new toy.

The next morning when we got in the car to take the kids to school, Katie said, “I think I’ll 218215.jpgvacuum the car today– just for fun! She suggested that I should put her vacuum on our happy talk blog–”Because,” she said, “appliances that really work well, make people happy!” So I am. I did. If you find yourself needing some excitement in life, forget about gardening or even calling your travel agent, instead try buying a new vacuum– like the Eureka 4870HZX Boss with a power paw turbo brush. Katie thinks it will provide you with fun and happiness! I know I want one.

By the way, now she is looking at new washing machines, so check back later to see more ways to find happiness in your life!

(P.S. Does anyone have a toaster that makes them happy? Mine is a cause of vexation.)

  1. I love this story! A new vacuum really does bring happiness! I can relate to Katie’s excitement. My parents bought us one for Christmas when they were up here. I love it but it doesn’t sound as cool as Katie’s! I wish I had known about this one when I was deciding which one to buy!

  2. My stairs and my vacuum “waste my happiness” to quote 4 yr old Kye, maybe I need that new vacuum?

  3. I just got a new vacuum. Not nearly so cool as Katie’s, but it does make me happy to know that it is working hard and I’m working less!

  4. My husband is a born designer of everything even vacuum’s. It is a pet peave for him when something is not designed right and does not function properly. Vacuum’s in particular have been a great source of frustration for him! For years we have been purchasing and returning them. I made the mistake of picking out my vacuum based on the fact it was a great brand, I thought so anyway. It looked nice, and came with a neat dusting attachment. It didn’t take long before Ash was returning it back to Walmart and left me vacuumless. He then went on a hunt for the “perfect vacuum”. At one point he decided to stop by a specialty vacuum store and it was there that he found our dream vacuum. It is a Riccar, not the prettiest thing I have ever seen but boy does it get the job done! It comes with lots of special attachments and hoses. Our house is a pain to keep the floors clean because it is all tile and hardwood on the main floor with lots of stairs. But with this vacuum it is almost fun! My hubby has sworn to never buy another brand and he was as cute as Katie when he used it for the first time. It has actually been a year and we haven’t taken it back and replaced it, now that’s a first! I have even lent it to neighbors for a trial run and won them over as well!

  5. Mom, I love my toaster. It’s been working like brand new for about 5 years now. It’s a KitchenAid.
